I read the article that John highlighted on Reverse Mortgage Daily. I am quite tired of seeing articles describe reverse mortgages and our industry in a way that makes the program and the industry a thing to avoid….. at all costs. I believe that in a time of abject financial turmoil, we need to set the record straight….repeatedly. There are too many people that need our help.
Our industry is a great industry. The incredible stories that loan officers can provide are endless. Many in this industry go that “extra mile” continuously.
So we need a team of people that will fire back at this stories. RMD can’t do it alone. NRMLA can’t do it alone. Reporters, editors and publishers have to discover, through our concerted efforts that perhaps what they wrote was incorrect. These stories stop people from considering the one thing that may be their answer.
Anybody else interested? Any other ideas?
I think we should make sure that we highlight our successes in with our local media outlets, by sending them articles and reminding them that we're watching.

Dennis,
I spend the first part of every day searching Google News for "reverse mortgage."
When I find a good article, like the recent U.S. News & World Report article from 2-9-09, I contact the reporter and let him know.
I also comment online when possible.
This not only lets the reporter know he can contact me in the future to get the story straight, but let's the consumer knows that the reporter got it right.
And, when they don't get it right, I do likewise.
This let's the reporter know who he can go to for the straight skinny on this product in the future, but also let's those reading online know when inaccurate info is in the article.
But we ALL need to be doing this.
Even if you can only do it once a week, this is an invaluable (and necessary) service to the public.
Thanks!

Dennis,
I, too, am willing to participate in Maine to quell the vicious rumors, which seem to arise from every corner of the uninformed financial world.
