It is sad how many seniors wrongly dismiss a reverse mortgage, as not for them. A reverse mortgage often provides the singular opportunity for a senior to turn their financial lives around. The misinformation that gets repeated day after day paralyzes seniors into doing nothing. Remember, if you don’t take action, change will not happen. A reverse mortgage lets seniors keep the money made off the equity in the home. You worked hard all your life to buy and maintain the home. Now in your later years, let your home work for you. Your home can become your best friend. If you don’t have sufficient funds, or you struggle each month it is time to consider a reverse mortgage. At least get the right information. Do not make a decision based on wrong information.
If family or friends are providing you with the additional money to make ends meet, then you may not need a reverse mortgage……..but if they can’t because they have financial responsibilities of their own…then you owe it to yourself to look into obtaining a reverse mortgage.
Society makes an assumption, that when we become adults, we suddenly and magically know all about this thing called money. We are even charged with the responsibility of understanding all about maintaining good credit. The fact is that many of us no little if anything about these things. Many seniors have misjudged their financial plan. Pensions may not be enough…social security may not be enough. The reverse mortgage can come to your rescue.
Stop blaming yourself. Start protecting yourself. You can’t change the past. But you can change tomorrow’s past…. today. A reverse mortgage could be the vehicle that changes your life immediately. Imagine waking up tomorrow, without a financial care in the world. Imagine waking up tomorrow and you are doing exactly what you want to do. Yes, you owe it to yourself to at least explore the possibility of a reverse mortgage.
Take that first step today.
That's a very insightful and thorough explanation about reverse mortgages and how they work. Kudos.

'Reverse Mortgages' or Equity Release Schemes as they are called in the UK are becoming more and more popular over here. When you look at the retirement income provision of most of the population (here in the UK the average retirement fund is supposedly £40,000), it beggars belief how some people even survive given the rising energy costs we are all facing!
Reverse mortgages, I believe, really help certain people out by, potentially clearing off existing mortgages and paying you an excess over this amount to better enjoy retirement. Surely that has to be a good thing for many who are struggling to survive. But then as this interest is rolled up into one giant loan paid off on death - I just hope the people doing it let their kids know! Great post by the way, more information is needed on this controversial area.

Abhorrent practices by lenders within the mortgage industry are called abusive lending. Choosing the right lender is not easy… Earned or borrowed cash are all at stake, specially your home. That’s why it is very important to be watchful and evade those Rapacious Lenders.

I've flipped a few houses and help people here and there when I can. The key, as you've said before, is get in good with a bank. Get them to trust you.
They don't want the collateral, they want $$
i wonder if.. once the presidential race is over, if this mortgage crisis will ever be fixed and will mortgage lenders ever help out those who are in financial trouble?

You said it - "social security might not be enough" ... and that becomes more and more the case. Solutions such as reverse mortgages will become more and more relavent until social security is fixed. If it gets fixed.

I am doing some research and came across your article. It great having articles like yours out there for the public to view. I am a reverse mortgage specialist and there is a lot of wrongful information provided to seniors. One of the biggest misconceptions is that the senior will no longer own their home or they will owe more then the value of the home is worth and the heirs are left with a huge debt. Please let's provide the senior with the accurate information so they can make the best decision no matter what company they use.

Hey Denis. Great article on reverse mortgage. The line' You can’t change the past. But you can change tomorrow’s past…. today' created an impact on my mind.
Some of the reasons that i know for people preferring a reverse mortgage are:
1) Retire in style
2) Pay hospital/medical bills
3) improve/modify a home
4) go on a dream vacation
